Into the Nexus: Club RAUM Announces New Room

Introducing Nexus, RAUM's new room. A dark, vertical counterpart to the Studio. True to its name — meaning a central connection or link — Nexus acts as the missing link in RAUM’s evolution. It bridges the gap between the open energy of the Studio and the need for a raw, uncompromising room built to complete the club’s musical ecosystem.

Designed from the perspective of the dancer, the space shifts the focus toward verticality, shadow, and a harder musical direction. With no distractions or flashy effects, the focus can be entirely shifted within, facilitating a space for deep, introspective listening, a place to truly connect with body and mind. The launch of Nexus also triggers a permanent makeover of the club’s entire lighting grid, adding a more intricate dimension for AV exploration.

Designed by architects Joaquin Valdes and Bram van Grinsven alongside audiovisual artists Ben Kreukniet and Albert van Abbe, Nexus introduces a raw space shaped by the direct experience of the dancefloor.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

For Valdes and Van Grinsven, it all started with a cathedral. They found that a cathedral and a club could share the same layout, and there's something playful about bringing the shape of a church into a club.

In Nexus, the booth becomes the altar. Around it, corridors wind off and connect different parts of the dancefloor. Upstairs in the Studio, the focus is on the collective. Downstairs, Nexus is about the individual: the urge to wander off the dancefloor, see what's happening in the corridors, and find your way back in. A good club should offer a sequence of atmospheres and a little tension, where you never quite know what you'll see or find next.

Most of all, the room is made for the people in it. For the architects, RAUM's community is what makes the club special: people discovering themselves and each other, and feeling that the space is theirs.

LIGHT ARCHITECTURE

Central to this experience is long-term light scenography developed by Ben Kreukniet and Albert van Abbe. Starting with the new Nexus space, the project is inspired by sacred geometry, synesthesia and the architecture of light and sound, exploring how light and dark can oscillate to challenge our notion of what is and can be.

Kreukniet and Van Abbe draw in natural phenomena and echoes of other places and infrastructure, giving the space layers of meaning. For them, sound always comes first, and light follows its lead.

A NEW SONIC BLUEPRINT

For RAUM founders Sven Bijma and Diego Meijers, Nexus is a resolute step to strengthen the club’s offering:‍

“Nexus delivers the honest, intense energy our community looks for. This is the environment for deeper, harder sounds and boundary-pushing audiovisual formats. By combining the architecture by Valdes and Van Grinsven with the light design by Kreukniet and Van Abbe, we’ll create a space that deepens our musical programming and stays true to the core of club culture.”
